The Organizing Committee of the Africa Youth Cup has confirmed that Sierra Leone will no longer host the third edition of the tournament, originally scheduled for April 2026.
The competition, which was set to run from April 24 to May 3 and include both male and female categories, will now be relocated, with a new host yet to be announced.
In an official communication to organizers, authorities in Sierra Leone expressed regret over their decision, citing unforeseen circumstances.
These include newly scheduled initiatives and activities within the country’s sports sector, which have made it impractical to proceed with hosting duties this year.
The Africa Youth Cup Organizing Committee acknowledged the development and expressed appreciation for the country’s initial commitment.
“We respect the decision communicated to us and remain grateful for the enthusiasm and commitment initially shown by Sierra Leone to support youth football development in Africa,” the committee said in a statement.
The Africa Youth Cup is an international tournament aimed at youth football academies across the continent, providing a competitive platform for emerging talents while promoting global football partnerships.
The inaugural edition was held in Cape Verde in 2019 and featured top academies, including the youth team of S.L. Benfica.
Despite the change in hosting plans for 2026, organizers reaffirmed their commitment to the tournament’s long-term vision of youth development, talent discovery, and international collaboration.
“The Africa Youth Cup remains a project dedicated to empowering young players, strengthening football academies, and connecting African talent with global opportunities,” the statement added.
The committee is currently consulting with stakeholders and partners across Africa as part of a broader strategic review aimed at strengthening the tournament’s structure for future editions.
All participating football academies, federations, and international guests have been duly informed, with organizers expressing appreciation for their understanding and continued support.
They also emphasized their openness to future collaboration with Sierra Leone in advancing youth football development across the continent.
Further updates regarding the next steps for the Africa Youth Cup are expected to be announced in due course.
