President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, has commended the successful staging of the maiden International Women’s Day Badminton Championship, describing it as a major boost to the development of the sport in Nigeria.
Speaking after the three-day tournament in Abuja, Orbih praised the initiative for its inclusiveness and impact, noting that it cuts across all levels of the game—from grassroots players to elite athletes and veterans.
“This tournament covers all levels of the game. It is a commendable effort that will positively impact badminton in Nigeria,” he said, while also calling for increased private sector investment to sustain growth in the sport.
The championship was organised by Shiwuese Aleva, founder of the Blooming Her Foundation, who used the platform to advocate for greater recognition of women in badminton both locally and internationally.
Aleva explained that the competition was designed not only to showcase talent but also to empower women and increase their visibility in the sport.
“This initiative is not just about playing badminton; it is about celebrating women and creating opportunities for them to be seen and recognised both nationally and globally,” she said.
The tournament attracted participants from across Nigeria and featured multiple categories, including Under-19 singles and doubles, senior players, and veteran women, ensuring broad participation across age groups and skill levels.
Aleva expressed satisfaction with the turnout and support from stakeholders, including officials of the federation, noting that it reflects growing acceptance of women’s badminton in the country.
She also revealed plans to make the championship an annual event, with the ambition of expanding it to attract participants from across Africa and beyond.
The success of the maiden edition has sparked optimism among stakeholders, with expectations that the competition will continue to grow in stature and contribute significantly to the development of women’s badminton in Nigeria.
