Port Harcourt, May 22, 2026- Government and coperate organizations have urged to prioritize welfare of the elderly people amidst worsening economic situation in the country.
Members of the Federated Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ) made the appeal during a visit to the ‘Home for the Elderly’ operated by the Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt.
The visit was part of activities of the chapel’s Press Week.
During the visit Comrade Amaechi Okonkwo, Chairman of the chapel acknowledged present economic hardships and possible impact on such facility.
He therefore, called on government and coperate groups to continuously strengthen partnerships with the home so as to enhance their living condition.
Okonkwo also noted that the chapel deemed it important to extend kindness and support to the elderly by donating essential items, including foodstuffs and toiletries, to the home.
According to him, visits to charity homes have become a regular feature of the Correspondents’ Week activities because members believe people living in such homes deserve to celebrate and feel loved despite their circumstances.
Receiving the items on behalf of the home, the Matron, Rev. Sr. Maryjane Raphael, expressed appreciation to the Correspondents’ Chapel for the gesture.
She also prayed for God’s blessings upon the journalists who took out time to visit the elderly residents.
The Rev Sr. explained that the Home for the Elderly is open to all persons above the age of 70, irrespective of religious affiliation.
She also commended the various organisations and individuals who have continued to support the facility through visits and donations.
