More than a decade after his death, the humanitarian legacy of Pa Salami Aremu Jimoh has continued to resonate in Sierra Leone, where he was recently honoured posthumously for his contributions to humanity and the communities he served.
Pa Salami, who was born in 1934 in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, moved to Sierra Leone in search of opportunities and eventually established a successful career in the artisanal diamond business.
He spent several years in Hangha and Tongo in the Eastern Province, where he built strong relationships with miners, traders, families and other residents.
Although he was widely respected as a businessman, those who knew him closely said his greatest legacy was his generosity and commitment to helping others.
He was remembered as a trusted businessman, father figure, adviser and mentor who offered assistance to people facing financial difficulties and encouraged young people seeking to establish businesses.
His reputation for honesty, fairness and compassion earned him lasting respect in the communities where he lived and worked.
The posthumous recognition has therefore provided an opportunity for residents, friends and family to celebrate a man whose influence extended beyond commercial success.
His children recently organised a three-day Qur’anic reading in his honour, bringing together family members, friends, Islamic scholars, neighbours and well-wishers.
During the programme, prayers were offered for the repose of his soul, with supplications for Allah to forgive his shortcomings, illuminate and expand his grave and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus.
Food was also prepared and distributed to participants, reflecting the culture of generosity associated with his memory.
For his family, the honour represents more than recognition of Pa Salami’s achievements. It is a reminder of the values he lived by, including honesty, humility, compassion, generosity and service to humanity.
His enduring reputation in Hangha, Tongo and other parts of Sierra Leone demonstrates how acts of kindness can outlive an individual.
Though Pa Salami has been gone for more than a decade, his memory remains alive through the people he helped, the relationships he built and the values he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
