Port Harcourt, Oct. 22, 2026 – The Agricultural and Social Entrepreneurship Foundation (ASEF) has partnered Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rivers, on a waste-to-agriculture initiative to promote sustainable farming and job creation.

ASEF President, Mr Azeez Oluwale, disclosed this on Wednesday in Port Harcourt during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the university.

Oluwale said the Waste4Meal project was a circular initiative designed to convert waste into useful agricultural resources.

He explained that one of its components was black soldier fly farming, which converts organic waste into insect protein for animal feed and organic fertilisers.

“The proposed Waste4Meal ecosystem was designed to connect insect farming with poultry, aquaculture and greenhouse cultivation, while supporting hatcheries, processing and cold storage.

“When fully operational, the project will maximize the use of organic resources, reduce waste, address high feed costs and create employment opportunities within the university community and its environ,” he said.

Responding, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Okechukwu Onuchukwu, commended ASEF for the initiative.

Onuchukwu described the black soldier fly farming as an affordable alternative for producing animal feed and fertilisers, noting that fertilizers had become increasingly expensive for local farmers.

He said the project would also strengthen the Faculty of Agriculture and help position it as a revenue-generating faculty.

The vice-chancellor urged students and other individuals to explore opportunities in agriculture for wealth creation.

The Dean of Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Godfrey Kalio, commended ASEF and described the partnership as a milestone in agricultural development.

Kalio pledged the faculty’s commitment to the project’s implementation and sustainability.

Our Correspondent reports that the MoU provides for academic participation and access to approved facilities by the university, while ASEF will provide technical expertise, programme delivery and funding.###
