Teranga Lionesses of Senegal Thursday evening piped Harambee Starlets of Kenya by a lone goal as the 2nd round of of the ongoing 2026 WAFCON matches in group A in Morocco.
Ndeya Casset gave an assist to Seynaboni Mbengua who scored in the 35th minute.
The Senegalese team tried to change the game as Kenya piled pressure for equalizer and probably a win towards 20 minute to the end of the game by substituting five players in a row but the strategy did not produce anything.
Kenya has never beaten Senegal at the senior women’s level as Senegal won all the three matches played and scored all the 7 goals meaning that Kenya has never scored against Senegal too.
On 30th July 2004, Senegal trounced them 3-0 in a WAFCON match; on 15th January 2012 Senegal won a friendly match by a lone goal; and on 7th January 2019 Senegal won 3-0 in another WAFCON match.
Senegal ranked 79 were superior and better experienced attending WAFCON finals for the 3rd time and making quarterfinals in 2022 and 2024.
Kenya ranked 128 is coming for the 2nd time and we’re sent out at the group stage in 2016.
Morocco is playing Algeria in a North African Derby right now in the 2nd match of the 2nd round of group A.
Morocco tops that group with 3 points after beating Kenya 4-0 in round 1; Algeria is 2nd after beating Senegal 2-0 also in round 1; Senegal with the victory just gotten is 3rd and Kenya is there at the bottom.
Algeria will meet Kenya next while Morocco has Senegal to contend with to stay on top.
By Tomorrow, Friday at 6pm, Ivory Coast will tackle Xenophobic prone South Africa while at 9pm Burkina Faso will play Tanzania in group B.
On Saturday at 6pm Egypt will contend with surprise Malawi team while the Defending champions, Super Falcons of Nigeria will play a redemption match against Zambia at 9pm.
