The Nigeria Aquatics Federation has concluded participation at the 17th Africa Aquatics Championships held in Oran, Algeria, with impressive performances, historic milestones, and continental recognition that further underline the remarkable growth of aquatics sports in Nigeria.
Team Nigeria finished the championships with a total of THREE BRONZE MEDALS, delivered through determined performances by the nation’s swimmers against some of Africa’s finest talents.
One of the standout moments of the championships came in the Girls’ 100m Butterfly, where India Kate Brown secured a BRONZE MEDAL for Nigeria after posting an impressive time of 1:05.73. Her achievement highlighted the emergence of a new generation of promising Nigerian swimmers capable of competing strongly on the continental stage.
Nigeria also recorded several commendable performances throughout the competition. In the Senior Men’s 100m Butterfly final, Collins Ebinga finished 5th with a time of 54.92 after a highly competitive race. On Day Five, Clinton Opute narrowly missed out on a podium finish in the Men’s 50m Freestyle final but delivered an outstanding Personal Best time of 22.94 seconds, further demonstrating Nigeria’s steady technical progress in elite swimming events.
The championships also featured promising appearances from junior swimmer Ivan Ijomoni and other athletes who represented the country with resilience, discipline, and determination.
In a major highlight at the closing ceremony, Africa Aquatics honoured the Nigeria Aquatics Federation with the award for the Fastest Developing Federation in Africa. The prestigious recognition reflects the federation’s rapid progress, improved international competitiveness, and sustained commitment to athlete development and technical advancement.
This continental recognition further validates the transformation currently taking place in Nigerian swimming. In previous years, Nigeria rarely featured prominently on the African aquatics medal table. However, through the visionary leadership and support of the National Sports Commission led by Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade, the sport has witnessed strategic reforms and renewed investment that have produced historic outcomes.
These efforts previously led to Nigeria’s breakthrough performances at the 16th Africa Aquatics Championships in Cairo, Egypt, where new African records were achieved, alongside the country’s historic SILVER MEDAL performance on the global stage.
The current Board of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation has continued to build on this momentum through deliberate investments in athlete development, exposure, grassroots growth, and technical excellence. Their dedication has continued to inspire confidence in the future of Nigerian aquatics and position the country among the fastest-rising swimming nations in Africa.
The Federation expresses deep appreciation to the National Sports Commission, coaches, athletes, stakeholders, sponsors, and supporters whose contributions made the championship campaign successful.
Nigeria leaves Oran not only with medals, but with continental recognition and renewed optimism for even greater accomplishments in future international competitions.
