Port Harcourt, June 3, 2026-The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has discribed sports as a veritable tool for healthy living as it commemorates the 2026 ‘World Bicycle Day.
Mr Francis Ajatta, Rivers Sector Commander reiterated this while flagging off a bicycle riding excercise to mark the event on Wednesday in Port Harcourt.
According to him, the annual celebration initiated by the United Nations was observed in collaboration with the Bicycle Riders Association of Rivers.
Ajatta noted that the event would also provide more sensitization on inherent sports opportunities in cycling.
He also enjoined the government to factor bicycle tracks into modern road constructions so as to keep riders safe.
The sector Commander therefore, encouraged residents to embrace bicycle as an alternative means of transportation for short distance journeys so as to save cost and protect the environment.
“Apart from saving the cost on fuel and keeping riders physically fit, bicycle is one of the most environmentally friendly mode of transportation.
“Unlike others, bicycle does not emit carbon into the atmosphere, it also reduces traffic congestion and enhances road aesthetics,”he said.
Responding, Mr Emmanuel Onosenya, a retired cycling couch thanked FRSC for the collaboration.
Onosenya acknowledged the state’s dominance in terms sports, particularly in cycling.
He appealed for more partnerships from government and private induviduals to enable the body leverage available opportunities in the sector.

“Sports could be used as a tool for rehabilitation and empowerment especially for some of our youths who have gotten themselves entangled in cultism and other social vices.
“If these youths channel those energies into sports, they would definitely go places.
“We would continue to increase sensitization by enabling our youths become aware of pizes and rewards attached to cycling competitions.he said.
