Port Harcourt, July 17, 2026-Mr Godwin Akandu, the new Rivers chapter chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria(AFAN) has promised to strengthen synergy with the government to enhance agricultural productivity in the state.
Akandu reiterated this during an official inauguration of the group’s state executives on Friday in Port Harcourt.
The executives include Mr Godwin Akandu(Chairman), Chua Abbey (Deputy Chairperson), Stanley Ibe(General Secretary), Bernard Ikpeazu(Treasurer) amongst others.
Lamenting high cost of fertilizers and pesticides, Akandu said the menace had posed a major barrier to productivity and appealed for government intervention.
According to him, many farmers who usually invest during the farming seasons end up getting low outputs due to inadequate deployment of farm inputs.
Attributing poor harvest to high cost of inputs, the chairman emphasized the need for government to subsidize on fertilizer cost to promote food sufficiency
He also Pledged commitment to members welfare while also vowing to initiate policies and programs that would alleviate farmers plights.
The farmer however, expressed worries that Rivers farmers alongside farmers in 10 states in the country did not benefit from a recent federal government input distribution.
“Recently Rivers alongside 10 states did not benefit from the federal government fertilizer intervention.
“Its so painful to hear that some states including Rivers were asked to hold on while others were getting fertilizers.
“We are appealing to the federal government to ensure equitable distribution across states so as to promote food surfficiency” Akandu said.
Also speaking, the group’s Secretary Mr Stanley Ibe on behalf of members appealed for government assistance to boost agriculture in the state.
Attributing poor harvest to high cost of inputs and the lack of mechanized farm implements, Ibe emphasized the need for government to provide tractors and other mechanized equipments to enhance agricultural output.
