Grassroots to Greatness: Iloenyosi, Anichebe Plot Football Renaissance in Anambra

Chikelue Iloenyosi, Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association, has reaffirmed commitment to grassroots football development following a strategic meeting with former Super Eagles striker Victor Anichebe, an indigene of the state.

The engagement focused on strengthening youth football structures, creating sustainable development pathways, and positioning Anambra as a powerhouse for talent discovery in Nigeria.

President Iloenyosi described the meeting as a significant step toward building a lasting football legacy in the state.

“Victor Anichebe is not just a former Super Eagles striker; he is one of our own from Anambra who has competed at the highest level of world football. His experience and exposure will greatly inspire our young players.”

“We are committed to structured grassroots programmes, organized youth competitions, and proper mentorship systems that will allow our talents to grow and compete nationally and internationally.”

About Victor Anichebe

Victor Chinedu Anichebe hails from Anambra State, South-East Nigeria. He built a distinguished professional career in England, playing in the Premier League for Everton F.C., West Bromwich Albion F.C., and Sunderland A.F.C..

A physically strong and dynamic forward, Anichebe represented Nigeria at senior level and was part of the squad that won silver at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Since retiring from active football, he has remained vocal about the need for structural reforms and improved grassroots systems in Nigerian football — a vision that aligns closely with President Iloenyosi’s development agenda in Anambra.

The Way Forward, Both leaders agreed on key focus areas, including:

Establishing organized grassroots leagues across the state,Upgrading training facilities and infrastructure,Capacity building for coaches and referees,Creating scouting and mentorship platforms for emerging talents.
