The inaugural WOW Africa Women’s Summit and Excellence Leadership Awards celebrated exceptional African women who have demonstrated excellence in leadership, entrepreneurship, humanitarian service, public service, and community development.
Held on Thursday in Abuja, the summit brought together women leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and advocates from across the continent to explore strategies for promoting gender equality, inclusive leadership, and women’s empowerment.
In her opening address, the Founder of WOW Africa, Ginika Tor, described the initiative as a platform dedicated to showcasing the transformative impact of women and their contributions across all sectors of society.
She explained that the vision for WOW Africa was conceived in 2018 after participating in a leadership programme that inspired her to create a platform capable of driving meaningful social change.
“Our vision is to break barriers, strengthen collaboration among African women, and inspire transformative leadership across the continent,” she said.
Tor noted that the successful launch of the summit reflected the increasing need for platforms that empower women, encourage collaboration, and create opportunities for future generations of female leaders.
Addressing the issue of xenophobia, particularly attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa, she called for greater unity among Africans, urging governments and citizens to reject discrimination and embrace peaceful coexistence.
According to her, Africa’s development depends on viewing one another as partners rather than rivals.
She also urged governments, private sector organisations, and development partners to move beyond symbolic celebrations of women by implementing policies that expand access to education, funding, mentorship, and leadership opportunities.
“Africa’s future will be shaped by women who dare to rise, dare to lead, and dare to transform their communities,” she added.
A panel session themed “Raising Future Leaders: Empowering Young Women for Global Impact” featured distinguished women from public service, entrepreneurship, humanitarian work, youth development, and public policy.
The panellists highlighted the importance of mentorship, practical skills development, and confidence-building in preparing young women to compete successfully on the global stage.
Among the speakers, Mrs Suzan Kiridi-Lokpobiri, wife of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil) and founder of the Reaching Every Adult and Child Foundation, shared her personal story of resilience. She recounted how she abandoned her childhood ambition of becoming a banker after marriage before discovering her passion for business, humanitarian work, and politics.
Encouraging women interested in politics, she urged them to remain determined despite setbacks.
“If you want to succeed in politics, you must keep pushing, remain focused and never give up. One day, your opportunity will come,” she said.
Also speaking, Dr Nneoma Okorocha, wife of the former Governor of Imo State, called for increased support for women, describing them as the foundation of families and society. She stressed that empowering women ultimately strengthens communities and nations and encouraged women to continue supporting one another.
The speakers commended WOW Africa for creating a movement that extends beyond dialogue by inspiring action, amplifying women’s voices, and opening doors for the next generation of female leaders across Africa.
The summit concluded with the presentation of the WOW Africa Excellence Leadership Awards and certificates to women who have made outstanding contributions in leadership, entrepreneurship, humanitarian service, public service, and community development.
The event also featured cultural entertainment, dancing, and a musical performance by renowned singer Joy “Jodie” Eseoghene, popularly known for her hit song Kuchi Kuchi.
