The President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF), Lekan Fatodu, has urged Nigeria’s swimming team to serve as worthy ambassadors of the nation and the federation as they prepare to compete at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, scheduled for July 23 to August 2, 2026.
Fatodu gave the charge as Nigeria’s swimming representatives—Abduljabar Adama, Clinton Opute, Collins Ebinga, and Dorcas Oka—continued the final phase of their preparations at a high-performance training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, ahead of the Games.
Commending the athletes for earning their places through dedication, discipline, and consistent hard work, the NAqF President encouraged them to compete with confidence while upholding the values of sportsmanship and excellence.
“You are carrying the hopes and aspirations of millions of Nigerians. Beyond competing for medals, you are ambassadors of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation and our great nation. Let your conduct, commitment, and performances reflect the true Nigerian spirit,” Fatodu said.
Expressing confidence in the team’s readiness, Fatodu noted that the training camp in Aberdeen has provided an ideal environment for the swimmers to fine-tune their preparations before the Games.
“We have confidence in your abilities and believe you have what it takes to win laurels for Nigeria. Stay focused, trust in your preparation, and give your very best every time you step into the pool. The federation and the entire country are behind you.”
The NAqF President reaffirmed the federation’s unwavering commitment to the development of aquatics across Nigeria, describing the Commonwealth Games as another significant platform for the country’s swimmers to showcase their progress while competing against some of the world’s finest athletes.
According to him, strong performances and podium finishes in Glasgow would not only bring pride to Nigeria but also inspire a new generation of swimmers and accelerate the growth of aquatics nationwide.
“Winning medals at the Commonwealth Games will not only be a personal achievement but will also inspire the next generation of swimmers and further strengthen the development of aquatics in Nigeria. Go out there, compete with pride, and make Nigeria proud.”
The Nigerian quartet is expected to conclude its training programme in Aberdeen before moving to Glasgow, where thousands of athletes from across the Commonwealth will compete. Nigeria will be looking to its swimmers to deliver outstanding performances and further enhance the country’s reputation in international aquatics.
