Sensational Stars Academy of Gwagwalada emerged champions of the 2026 NLO Unity Preseason Football Tournament, defeating Likeminds FC 3–2 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time.
The final match was played at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital Football Field in Abuja.
Sensational Stars Academy, the only non-league team in the competition, finished top of Group B with seven points, while Likeminds FC topped Group A with the same number of points.
Throughout the tournament, the Gwagwalada-based side displayed impressive performances, overcoming several teams competing in the Nationwide League One (NLO).
Speaking after the final, the Chief Operating Officer of the NLO, Dr. Olushola Ogunnowo, commended the organisers and participating teams for a successful competition.
According to him, Gwagwalada has continued to prove itself as an important hub for grassroots football development within the Federal Capital Territory.
Ogunnowo also praised the young players of Sensational Stars Academy for their confidence and determination while competing against more experienced sides.
The tournament highlighted emerging talents, with Sensational Stars defeating Likeminds FC, a strong NLO side, to clinch the title.
Coach Mathews Kalu described the victory as remarkable, noting that the team had demonstrated its ability to compete at a higher level.
The Unity Preseason Tournament continues to promote grassroots football by providing clubs with an opportunity to prepare for the new season. Organisers expressed satisfaction with the growth of the competition, while the NLO also used the event to test new technological systems ahead of the coming season.
Sensational Stars Academy are now looking to secure promotion to NLO Division Two, having recently competed in the FCT State League Division One. Their triumph in the tournament, observers say, underlines the team’s growing potential and ambition for greater success.
